UAFP Summer Events UAFP held several events this summer to provide family fun, networking, and educational opportunities to our members. STUDENT STRIDES: HIKE WITH A DOC Students from the Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) were invited to join physicians on a hike in beautiful Big Cot- tonwood Canyon in August. The group had a good mix of attending and practicing physicians, residents and students, which led to meaningful conversations between doctors at the start of their journey in medicine and doctors with years of wisdom and experience to share. UAFP will continue to find ways to support medical students and residents by providing opportunities for them to find mentors in family medicine and connecting them with resources to help them succeed as physicians. FAMILY PHYSICIAN NIGHT WITH THE SALT LAKE BEES Family physicians and their families from throughout the state joined us for our first ever Family Physician Night with the Salt Lake Bees. Nearly 100 people enjoyed an all-you- can-eat ballpark buffet complete with as many hamburgers, hotdogs, baked beans, chips, and cookies as they could manage to eat. After the picnic, everyone cheered on the Salt Lake Bees against the New Orleans Baby Cakes. Our own UAFP board president, Dr. Kyle Jones, even got to throw out the first pitch! While the Bees did not walk away victors that night, the event was a success, and we hope this will be- come an annual event for UAFP members and their families. We will be announcing next year’s game day in spring 2020. MEDICAL CANNABIS CME With the use of medical cannabis for certain medical condi- tions becoming legal in Utah, UAFP wanted to help primary care providers separate fact from fiction about the law passed by the state Legislature. UAFP worked with the Utah Department of Health to host one of the first in-person medical cannabis CMEs in the state. Attendees learned how physicians can become qualified medical providers, which conditions can legally be treated with medical cannabis in Utah, and clinical information about how to utilize cannabis as part of the treatment plan for patients with qualifying health conditions. UAFP will continue to provide information about the status of the law and any changes family physi- cians need to be aware of as the state moves closer to full implementation of the law in 2020. HAVE AN IDEA FOR AN EVENT ? We are always looking for new ways to engage family physi- cians in a way that is meaningful to you. Do not hesitate to reach out to us with your ideas! 19 |
