Basic biography (where are you from, where did you study, why did you move/stay in/come back to Utah, family information, etc.) I was born in Seattle, WA and grew up in the greater Seattle area. I got my un- dergraduate degree at Central Wash- ington University, which is about two hours east of Seattle in the center of the state of Washington. For medical school, I moved to Tennessee and at- tended Lincoln Memorial University. I came out to Utah as a fourth-year student per recommendation from a friend who recently graduated from the UVFM residency. He spoke so highly of the program that I decided to try it out. I fell in love with the program and all the outdoor activities that Utah had to offer. Why do you love family medicine? Why did you pick it? I love the broad scope that family medi- cine encompasses, and how as a pro- vider you can individualize your career and practice based on your personal skills and interests. What travel (national and international) have you done related to family medicine? I have spent time training in many set- tings within the US and internationally as a medical student and plan to con- tinue traveling to train in various settings as a resident. In the US, I did rotations as a student in Tennessee, Washing- ton, California, and Utah. I have also participated in various international projects and training geared toward fam- ily medicine in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Honduras, and Sierra Leone. What is the best way to stay balanced as a family doctor? I balance the busy schedule and natu- ral stress of being a resident by getting outdoors as often as possible. I enjoy running, hiking, and camping. I take time to explore the mountains and parks in Utah as much as I can. Any other passions, anecdotes, lessons, wisdom, etc.? I love practicing medicine in rural set- tings in both the US and internationally. I enjoy the unique learning opportuni- ties that arise in these settings.  Melissa V.
